Two centuries ago, humanity launched its greatest achievement: a ship carrying ten thousand colonists and a payload of self-replicating machines programmed to tame a distant world. By the time the passengers opened their eyes, the planet would be ready. A new Earth, assembled and perfected.
But two hundred years is a long time for machines to be left to their own devices.
He wakes drowning, with no name and no memory. Around him, a vault of sleepers stacked into the darkness. Something banging its way through the racks. And the first human he meets tries to kill him.
